Bioenergy Australia and Australian Hydrogen Council Release Joint Letter in Support of Australian Renewable Gas Market Development

Helmont Energy is proud to announce that it is a signatory to the Joint Letter in Support of Australian Renewable Gas Market Development, released yesterday by Bioenergy Australia and the Australian Hydrogen Council. The letter is signed by over 50 supporting organisations and businesses, representing a cross section of the Australian economy. The letter follows the release of the Technology Investment Roadmap Discussion Paper, and discusses the potential for renewable gasses to provide a solution to a number of barriers to energy market decarbonisation including: variable renewable electricity, the difficulty in decarbonising heavy industry, heavy vehicles and domestic gas supply and the difficulty of storing energy.

The letter calls for policy changes to:

  • identify and raise awareness about the potential for renewable gasses in achieving emissions reduction targets

  • unlock seed funding for renewable gas projects to showcase, activate and de-risk the market, and

  • build market confidence

This joint letter comes at a crucial time for the biomethane industry, and reflects Helmont’s broader advocacy work. Helmont is pursuing its vision to create a vibrant biomethane industry which both produces economic projects, decarbonises the Australian economy and adds jobs to regional and remote communities. This will require supportive policy, and Helmont energy believes the first steps in creating this are:

  1. The selection of biomethane as a priority technology under the Technology Investment Roadmap.

  2. The development of a methodology determination for biomethane, which will allow biomethane projects to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).

  3. The amendment of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Measurement Determination to allow users of biomethane and hydrogen that has been transported through the pipeline network to report their emissions reductions.
